Affordable Places to Visit With Your Tax Refund

It may not be the most wonderful time of the year for many, but according to a recent Bankrate poll, 54% of Americans expect a tax refund. Of those surveyed, 7% plan to spend their tax refund on a much deserved vacation. Whether you have travel plans on your mind, or just like to fantasize about ideal travel destinations, here are five places to visit with your tax refund.

Palm Springs

While your tax refund may be enough to get away, it’s probably not enough to travel the world on. Palm Springs is an affordable dessert oasis for the traveler looking to get away on their refund check. Palm Springs is a short driving distance from Mount San Jacinto State Park and Joshua Tree National Park. Both are beautiful destinations where you can unwind and unplug from the day to day grind. Palm Springs is also known for its epic spa retreats and golfing greens.

New Orleans

Your refund may come in just in time for the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage festival which takes place from April – May. The city is known for outstanding food and architecture, but most notably for their “lively” street festivals. Take in the culture, and feel good about supporting the city that’s gone through a lot in recent years. During your trip make sure to spend time in the French Quarter, Jackson Square and Bourbon Street. Taste traditional dishes the city’s known for like Jambalaya, red beans and rice, and don’t skip out on the beignets.

Dominican Republic

Take the tropical vacation you’ve always dreamed of with a trip to the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic is almost always the cheapest island in the Caribbean to travel to. Families of four can stay for a great price, making it a great pre-summer getaway. Santo Domingo is home to Zona Colonial, the first Spanish settlement in the Americas, with colonial buildings dating back 500 years ago. Santo Domingo is also the largest urban city in the Caribbean, known for active nightlife with a wide variety of bars, clubs and restaurants.

Las Vegas

While many view Las Vegas as a place to lose money, it’s home to many affordable four and five star hotels. Stay away from the craps and card tables, and spend your tax refund on food and entertainment. Room rates for a five-star hotel start at just $150 a night depending on the time of year, and casinos are always offering special promotions and discounts. Buffets allow visitors to enjoy unlimited fine dining for one affordable price. The city is also home to world class shows, and performers like Celine Dion, Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey and Britney Spears.
